Foundation is the part of the building that lies below the ground level (the lower part of the structure) and transfers the structural loads to the supporting soil or rock. The main function of the foundation is to safely transfer highly concentrated column or wall reactions to the ground without causing soil failure or unsafe differential settlement of the supported structure. In fact, we believe that any structure will be and will remain safe as long as there is a safe path for the loads, in fact the structural elements such as columns, beams, slabs and finally foundations are mainly responsible for the transmission of loads in series on the ground. However, we can judge that foundations are the most important elements of any structure, and without foundations the structure would not rise above the ground. Foundation design includes a site inspection program to create the most appropriate type of foundation for a given structure that is affected by many factors such as: • Soil bearing capacity onsite. • The geological condition of the soil at the site. • Depth of foundation for adjacent buildings. • The load of the structure to be designed. • Other factors related to the expected stability of the site's soil.
