Abstract
Urban cities worldwide are experiencing significant and rapid population growth, leading to increased demand for housing and infrastructure, and creating substantial challenges in ensuring food security. This extensive urban expansion consumes vast areas of agricultural land, exacerbating food insecurity in certain regions. in Palestine, where stringent import and export restrictions imposed by the occupation are prevalent, there is a pressing need for innovative solutions to ensure food security. The development of urban agriculture as a foundation for food security and climate change mitigation emerges as an effective solution to address these challenges and create an environmentally and agriculturally sustainable community. The city of Nablus has been selected for this project primarily due to its severe blockade and political restrictions, which have exacerbated its food security crisis compared to other urban areas in the West Bank. The project aims to integrate agriculture into the urban fabric to enhance the city's ability to produce food locally, thereby reducing reliance on food imports and mitigating environmental impacts. The project includes developing plans that begin with creating a spatial development framework, followed by detailed plans for establishing urban farms and transforming Nablus’s industrial area into an agricultural-industrial zone. thereby strengthening the connection between urban farms and local communities. Plans will also be developed for distributing water infrastructure facilities in urban farms and the industrial area as part of agricultural-industrial integration. Additionally, detailed plans for vertical farming and rooftop gardens will be outlined. This project will contribute to achieving several important goals, such as increasing local food production and enhancing food security through the establishment of urban farms. It will also strengthen social connections, boost the local economy by creating new job opportunities, improve the quality of life in the city, and help protect agricultural land from unplanned urban expansion, thereby preserving the environment and promoting sustainability.
