Abstract
This graduation project is the structural analysis and design of The Jerusalem commercial center
in the city of Jerusalem in Palestine. The building is consisting of 14 floors with a total area equal to
19310 m2. It consists of several facilities such as parking, offices, stores, and residential apartments.
The external walls were divided into shear walls with stone in some areas and into glass in others, and
the internal walls were divided into blocks into some areas and glass in others
This project was analyzed and designed for gravity forces such as dead loads, superimposed dead
loads, and live loads, and it was also analyzed and designed for seismic forces.
The horizontal resistance of the building was studied, such that the seismic load resisting system
was verified to be a Dual system; Ordinary reinforced concrete shear walls. On the other hand, The
Response Spectrum method was used in the seismic analysis, also the Equivalent static and time history
methods were used to check the results of the Response Spectrum (value of base shear). The soil under
the structure was determined to be type B. Also, building Dual system; Ordinary reinforced concrete
shear walls were used in this project, meaning that seismic forces are loaded onto the shear walls,
beams, and columns, and vertical loads are on the frames. The appropriate dimensions for each
structural and non-structural element were found in this project, such as slabs, beams, columns, and
walls of both types, and the structural plans which include layout and detailed reinforcement for each
structural element were prepared.
The reference in this project was several codes which are American Concrete Institute ACI 318-
11, American Society of Civil Engineers ASCE 7-10, and American Society for Testing and Materials
ASTM. This structure was represented on the Extended Three-Dimensional Analysis and design of
Building Systems -ETABS 19- software and the structure was then analyzed and designed on this
software. Several checks have been performed on the results of the ETABS software in the analysis.
Several checks have been performed on the structural elements to check the serviceability, strength,
and stability of the structure. Such as: checking the deflections with the two types of immediate and
6
long-term deflection. The equilibrium check was done and the percentage of error was very small After
that, several checks have been performed on seismic forces analysis results to ensure the ability of the
structure to withstand these seismic forces, such as the p-delta effect, drift check, vertical and
horizontal irregularities, and the base shear check.
Last of all, proper, scaled, clear, and detailed structural drawings were prepared using AutoCAD.
They included the required information about dimensions, reinforcement, development and splicing
