In the past, the design of the roads was mainly concerning the links between the major cities and large towns in the West Bank. However, the access roads between villages were not considered as the allocated budgets were limited. Recently, as the number of population and vehicles increases dramatically, the existing relevant infrastructure should be developed to fulfill the new requirements. One example for such roads is A'sira ash-Shamaliya-Talluza access road which is considered as an important link road is to be redesigned. The design and rehabilitation of such road will contribute in minimizing the travel time and distance from/to Tubas and Nablus governorates. Also, the project team suggest designing a new road connecting between A’sira ash-Shamalia-Talluza connected road with Al-Badhan. The project team contacted the Directorate of Ministry of Public Works and Housing in Nablus city in order to collect the required data related to the project. The upgrading of this project will enhance and encourage the mobility of the students and employers from Tubas and surrounding villages and towns. The functional classification of the road is local (access) road. The length of the section to be upgraded is about 3km from A'sira ash-Shamaliya to Talluza village and around 3km from Al-Badhan to A'sira ash-Shamaliya-Talluza road. The new proposed design is expected to solve the following existing problems in the targeted project: • The width of the road is limited, the width of the existing asphalt layer is approximately 6.5 m and the road are two-way/ two-lane road. • The lack for appropriate shoulder. • The lack of drainage facilities such as culverts, open and side ditches, no manhole, and no subsurface drainage network. • The lack in lighting across the road. • The need for redesign of existing certain horizontal curves (sharp curve) and high grade. • The existing of different pavement distresses such as (alligator, longitudinal and transverse, block, and edge) cracking. • The terrain is difficult also there is valley which considered as nature reserve. • The lack of a settlement plan in some areas for the new road Finally, the design of the road includes horizontal, vertical, cross-section, and calculating the quantities and total cost of construction. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials AASHTO 2011 standards and Civil 3D Software are used in the design of the road. Moreover, the AASHTO 1993 method is used in the design of pavementen_US
