Abstract
The interest in designing for multi-function building has been escalating with time as a result of the changing needs of users. “Rapid growth in urban centers continues to spur planners to create new solutions. multi-function buildings and developments go back to ancient times. Today, no planner can get away with simply designing a stand-alone office or residential building. The multifunction building not only sustainably utilizes resources and precious space, but also provides city inhabitants with neighborhoods that integrate work, home, shopping. The concept also allows planners to flexibly adapt building uses as times change” (urban-hub.com,2018)1. The main objective of this project is to design a multi-function building that consist of storage units, offices, and residential apartment. This design has taken in considerations such as architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical and environmental one. The methodology that has been followed through the project has different parts starting from data collection from literature review sources such as research papers and books addressing multifunction building and ending with end user problems in this kind of building like noise, parking and privacy. The tasks for achieving the project goals has been divided into two phases: Phase one: comprehensive literature review which has been conductive in order to collect information and standards. This help in revising the current plans and spaces, and check the architectural standard, orientation of building and the surrounding of site and this has been done by using simulation & software programs such as Revit for 3D drawing &environmental analysis, Design Builder for heating & cooling design, Dialux for lighting design and Etabs for structural re-design, 3D Model and make compatibility, Equilibrium and stress-strain checks. Phase two: started with the remaining architectural tasks such as redesign the spaces, and the environmental design including lighting, acoustics and ventilation systems, then moving to the remaining structural aspect which is designing the building using a software, mechanical design has included water, HVAC and Sewage systems design, the electrical design has contained lighting and power systems design. Finally, safety design which has include an alarm system with firefighting systems. The result of this project is producing an integrated building from the architectural, structural, environmental, mechanical, electrical aspects and fire safety, evacuation and alarm systems causing a comfortable and safe environment for users.
