Integrated Design of Public Library

Our project is mainly about the integration design of a public library building in Nablus city, specifically in Wadee Al Toffah which is located to the west of the city. The main problem for which we decided to perform the design of this type of buildings is the lack of having a public library building in Nablus city that takes into account all properties and design aspects of such type of libraries. Throughout this project, the first step was to collect necessary data concerning public libraries in terms of their features and facilities. It also concerns the modern vision of public libraries that shows us public libraries as places in which community people can gather and share their ideas and what they read as well, instead of only being as a place of individual reading and investigating. Therefore, we designed this type of libraries in a way that encourages all community people of all ages to come and experience joining this type of libraries. Some features that encourage people are internal spaces of group reading as well as a central garden that provides the possibility of reading in open spaces. As for design aspects, in terms of architectural design, we designed four zones which are: two buildings that consists of reading materials valid for all ages in addition to computer rooms. In the ground level we designed a closed theater and an open theater that can be used for cultural and entertainment activities, also in this level there are multipurpose hall and cafeteria. In this aspect, we implemented required functional relationships between spaces as well as the best distribution of these spaces. All that was designed and modeled using software such as “AutoCAD” and “Revit”. As for environmental aspect, it involved using shading systems and the study of daylight level inside the building, it also involved the acoustical design, thermal design by using “Design Builder” software and the implementation of natural ventilation techniques. As for structural design, it consisted of structural earthquake-resistance design of one block of the building by using “ETABS” software. As for electrical design, we used “DIALux evo” software for artificial lighting design, also we produced plans of sockets distribution and distribution boards. The final considered aspects were mechanical and safety systems. Regarding mechanical systems we designed water supply system, drainage system and HVAC system for the building. Concerning safety systems, they included the distribution of fire protection systems as well as emergency egress routes. Finally, we conducted a quantity survey and direct cost estimation for the building regarding all design aspects.
