| dc.description.abstract | Braille is a means of reading and writing for blind and visually impaired people. The history and development of the Braille system has made it possible for blind people to take notes, write letters, read books, etc.When mobile phones started to emerge on the market, their accessibility was less complex. Blind people practically had to memorize the layout of the phone's keypad, which is very similar to regular phones, practically with two extra needed keys, send and cancel. As mobile phones started to become more advanced, it required more and more effort to make mobile phones accessible to blind people.Our project is an Android application that allows blind people to send/read SMSs, make phone calls, add/delete/search notes, set reminders and chat with friends using a special chatting system. All of these operations are done by allowing users to type on touch screens using the Braille alphabet much in the same way they use it for reading. BrailleType gives the user a blank canvas, with the bottom 90% of the screen available to the user for entering in the characters and a strip at the top displaying them as they are typed, in addition to reading them out using Androids built-in text-to-speech synthesizer. | en |
