dc.description.abstractArtificial knees are an increasingly utilized technology. They allow for patients to regain mobility due to injury, pain, or joint damage. Unfortunately, due to material limitations and properties, these artificial knees have a finite lifespan (10-20 years). Therefore, the aim of this project to make an investigation for improving the materials used in the joints. Artificial replacement parts can be made of strong plastic, metal, or ceramic. All knee replacements, partial or total, will have parts made of a few different materials (likely metals and plastic. The chosen materials must be durable, allow for some flexibility with movement and be biocompatible (meaning it will not be rejected, corrode nor react with the body). The forces components that act on the human knee joint is calculated analytically. The forces depend on the movement of the knee joint during the human motion. For example standing, walking, upstairs……etc. These types of load were subjected to the knee joint model using finite element SolidWork software to determine the Von mises stress and the deflection of the middle part component of the knee joint. Using the results of stress to calculate the fatigue life of the knee joint using Goodman criteria. The finite element investigation show that using high density polyethylene material has fatigue life of 18 years and this material can be used in the human knee joint. In order to get more fatigue life A biomaterial should be design to have ultimate tensile strength of 70 MPa it will produce 26 years fatigue life.en_US
