Abstract
1.1 General. Structures are designed to serve a definite function. Shape and function go hand in hand, and the best structural system is the one which fulfills the needs of the user while being serviceable, attractive, and economically cost efficient. The emphasis of this chapter will be on the preliminary data and information that will be used later in the design. First, it will provide detailed description of the project, and an accurate description of the materials. Second, it will define the loads that act on the structure. Then it will discuss the site condition and the building structural system. 1.2 Project Description. The aim of this project is to apply the theoretical knowledge in practical applications through the design of Movenpick hotel. Movenpick hotel is suggested to be constructed on Rafidia- Nablus with overall (15,000) plot area. The entire building consists of six stories as shown in figure 1.1used as a hotel and entertainment centers. The basements serve as parking areas and offices while the roof is used for maintenance purposes. On the other hand the external walls will be constructed as masonry walls with height of 3 meters for all stories except the ground floor with 4.5 meters height. The first floor includes two concerts hall with large dimensions spans and no internal columns; the first hall is rectangle with 31 meters length and 22 meters width, and the second one is trapezoidal have a maximum length of 26 meters, and height of 27 meters. The first floor contains a swimming pool with 18 meters long, 8 meters wide and height of 1.4 meters. 1.3 Material The structural design of buildings requires the determination of the materials that will be used and its properties, because the type of material will affect the structural models and the loads. So, to understand the performance of a safe, economical, and serviceable concrete structure it is important to have a clear knowledge about its components. In this project, a group of materials will be used, where concrete and reinforcing steel are structural materials.
