The city of Tulkarm suffers from a continuous electricity crisis, because it depends mainly on the current imported from the Israeli Qatari station as the main supplier, and this result in huge financial losses. With the growing electricity consumption, Tulkarm has initiated an ambitious plan to increase the share of renewable energy sources, e.g. solar and wind, Incident solar radiation at the earth’s surface is the result of a complex interaction of energy between the atmosphere and the surface. Recently much progress has been made toward the creation of accurate, physically based solar radiation formulations that can model this interaction over topographic and other surfaces for a large range of spatial and temporal scales. In this study, geographic information system (GIS)-based methods and their applications in solar power system planning and design were reviewed. Three types of GIS-based studies, including those on solar radiation mapping, site evaluation, and potential assessment, were considered to elucidate the role of GISs as problem-solving tools in relation to photovoltaic and concentrated solar power systems for the conversion of solar energy into electricity. Because GISs are appropriate for handling geospatial data related to solar resource and site suitability conditions on various scales, the applications of GIS-based methods in solar power system planning and design could be expanded further. It has been found that the entire Bala’a village is almost suitable for solar energy harvesting with varying suitability index. It is recommended that the developed suitability model being considered by decision makers in the future plans of energy developmenten_US
