Abstract
Conventional mechanical wastewater treatment is a combination of physical and biological processes deigned to remove organic matter and solids from solution. Wastewater treatment is a relatively new major in engineering compared to other majors. The earliest mechanical method was plain sedimentation in Septic Tanks. Trickling Filters were first developed for municipal installations starting in about 1910. A second major advancement in biological treatment was the development of the Activated Sludge method. In general, the Activated Sludge process is a continuous or semi-continuous (fill and draw) aerobic method for biological wastewater treatment, including carbonaceous oxidation and nitrification. (Mark J. Hammer, 2008) This process is based on the aeration of wastewater with flocculating biological growth, followed by separation of treated wastewater from this growth. Part of this growth is then wasted, and the remainder is returned to the system. Usually, the separation of the growth from the treated wastewater is performed by settling (gravity separation) but it may also be done by flotation and other methods. The activated sludge process presently represents the most widespread technology for wastewater purification. Activated sludge plants can be found in different climate conditions - from the tropics to the polar regions, from sea level(wastewater treatment plants in ships) to extreme elevations(mountainous hotels). The scale of activated sludge plants ranges from package plants for one family to huge plants serving big metropolises. Wastewater treatment plants equipped with the activated sludge process are able to fulfill the most stringent effluent criteria. The ultimate goal of this project is to provide a better, healthier and more convenient situation for the citizens of Nablus. In the same time, the project will provide better conditions for the environment of the area and help it to flourish again. The more particular objectives will be:          To determine the Kinetic Constants of Nablus wastewater.         To redesign the Aeration Tank of Nablus-West wastewater treatment plant based on these Kinetic Constants.         To determine the BOD, COD, Nitrogen and Phosphorus Content for Nablus wastewater.         To determine the effect of industrial wastewater on the strength and quality of the influent wastewater. These objectives will be achieved by:                  Collecting data about industrial WW in Nablus and study its effects.         Building a Kinetics Model of the Activated Sludge process.         Performing a laboratory Determination of Kinetic Constants.
