Abstract
This study aimed to detect the validity of the proposed structural model to interpret emotional divorce according to some marital variables; marital infidelity, sexual frigidity, loveless, marital distrust, and marital silence among married individuals in the West Bank. It also aimed to identify the levels of variables mentioned above and to reveal the strength and direction of correlations among these variables. The study population consisted of married individuals in the West Bank, whether they have children or not, with the exception of those who have already fallen into divorce or have already married before the current marriage.
The sample was convenience sample and it consisted of 135 husbands and wives, 44 males and 91 females. To achieve the purposes of the study and in order to collect data; the researcher built two instruments; sexual frigidity and marital infidelity scales, and she used emotional divorce scale based on Stephen's theory, Al Jondi’s marital silence scale, Hendrick & Hendrick’s loveless scale, and Rempel, Holmes, and Zanna’s marital trust scale. The validities and reliabilities were checked using pilot study and the results supported utilizing the instruments.
The researcher used the correlation approach based on path analysis.The results of the model indicated the validity of the model to determinate the factors leading to emotional divorce, with minor modifications represented in the removal of some paths that are not statistically significant, and these paths are: from marital silence tomarital infidelity (α = 0.822), from marital infidelity to emotional divorce (α = 0.603), from loveless to marital infidelity (α = 0.603), and from marital trust to sexual communication (α = 0.113). In light of the results, the proposed model fitted the data well.
The results also showed that the level of emotional divorce, marital infidelity, loveless, marital silence, were statistically low, and all correlation coefficients among the study variables were statistically significant at the level of (α = 0.01). Some correlation coefficients were positive, while others were negative.
Based on the results and the proposed model, the researcher recommends developing strategies that increase harmony in the marital relationship and makes it more balanced by focusing on the skills of effective communication between couples, which will create an ambience of intimacy and love, and will affect marital satisfaction and adjustment among them.
