The purpose of this project is to analyze and design a 5 story building, the building is a commercial shopping center located on the main highway between Nablus and Tulkarm opposite to Nadi Al-Madina. Each story’s area varies from 6772.88m2 to 10044.09m2 . Due to the large area, the building was separated using joint separation. A sample calculation was made on block 5. ETABS 2016 software was used to analyze all blocks for gravity and lateral loads, gravity loads include building’s own weight, superimposed dead load, live loads and snow loads. For lateral loads, wind load was neglected. However, earthquake and soil loads were taken into consideration. Concrete B300 was used for slabs, beams, columns and shear walls, while steel grade 60 was used as longitudinal bars and stirrups. Block 5 columns were distributed according to functionality, as well as, satisfying span lengths considerations. The challenge was the large spans, and a cantilever system with 4.65m. Block 5 was modeled, with preliminary sections dimensions for all members. It was checked for compatibility, equilibrium, and internal forces to make sure the model functions properly. Deflection was checked according to ACI319-14, but limitations were not satisfied, this led to the introduction of beam-girder system and enlarged sections dimensions. As for earthquake analysis, response spectrum method was used. According to seismic design category the building’s lateral force structural system was determined to be building frame system with ordinary reinforced concrete shear walls, for this reason shear walls were added. However, this led to model two models for each block, the first model has only gravity loads without having shear walls in the model, and the second model has gravity and earthquake loads having shear walls in it. This was done in order to take the maximum reinforcement from one of the models. ASCE7-10 Code was used for the determination of minimum design loads of live loads, soil loads and for the computations of load combinations and seismic parameters. ACI319-14 was used for gravity load limitations, deflection, and members analysis and designen_US
