Abstract
City dwellers invest most of their time in everyday life activities as domestic chores, business, work, education and social interactions. There is thus a need for a time- span for recreational activities, in which humans enjoy a pleasant atmosphere. The importance of recreational centers thus appears in providing a temporal retreat from life pressure. After the end of the Second Intifada, Nablus city has witnessed a moderate rate of growth and development in various fields, including the recreational sector. Nevertheless, the city, in general, lacks an effective recreational development movement, especially in the Eastern side of the city. As we are fully aware of the importance of the recreational sector in the everyday urban life, our project mainly focuses on studying recreational centers from different engineering perspectives.   The project takes into account different aspects as the services and facilities usually provided by recreational centers, the targeted audience, the location of the center and its relation with the surroundings. In addition, the project investigates the many engineering aspects related to the construction of a recreational center as the architectural, environmental, technical, electrical, structural, and safety aspects. The research tools are based on collecting the targeted data through relevant websites, books, and e-journals.  Furthermore, relevant case studies of recreational centers, local and international, will be analyzed and studied to support our research scope and objective.      The results of our work is ready now, so we do expect to design an integrated effective report on recreational centers, that can be considered as an architectural, structural and environmental reference for any prospective recreational projects. The report is employed in this graduation project to design an existing recreational center in Nablus, as Hayat Nablus, or AL-Madena Club.   Recreation and leisure have multipe meanings, that are based on individual perceptions. For some, " recreation is an act of experience selected by the individual during his/her leisure to meet a personal purpose or desire, primarily for his/her own satisfaction. For others, recreation is a time frame when an individual is not working or studying; the time that can be spent as one pleases, and the time that is left after formal duties and the necessities of life have been taken care of.    Recreation and entertainment services have become an important part of government investments. Today, recreation constitutes a major force of national and local economics and is responsible for millions of jobs in such varied fields as government, travel and tourism, popular entertainment and the arts, health, fitness programs, hobbies and sports. It offers a social value in its benefits of boosting productivity and reducing the burden of ill health on society. Beyond its value as a form of sociability, recreation also provides major personal benefits in terms of meeting physical, emotional, and other important health-related needs of participants. This participation in sport and recreation builds stronger and safer communities, healthier, happier people, and can even improve educational outcome.   A vast range of activities, which are commonly broken down into the following four sectors, characterizes the recreational sector: Community recreation, Fitness, Outdoor recreation and Sport. The main objective of this sector is to watch over the best interests of the people by providing a recreation and leisure programs and services for all types of clients, paying special attention to the children, youths, senior citizens, disabled, low income population, and other special populations. These services may include managment room, internal halls, swimming pools, parking, stores, outdoor courts and others different services. The importance of entertainment summarized as part of human life; it has different forms depending on the interests of individuals and the surrounding social structure. The list of human recreation activities is endless, as they include almost all the leisure activities carried out by humans, like reading, playing/hearing music, watch movies or television, fishing, hobbies, sports and travel. In addition, these activities could be collective or individual, effective or ineffective, external or internal, healthy or unhealthy, and beneficial or harmful to society .Thus, we cannot say that all types of leisure activities are globally meaningful, useful, healthy or socially accepted. For example, in Arab-Muslim societies gambling, drinking alcohol is considered illegal activities, in contrast to other western countries. Project Objectives Despite of the suffocating effects of occupation, the rate of growth and development in Palestine is growing rapidly, especially after the second Intifada. Its amazing how Nablus City had progressed in various fields, such as Towers, hotels, restaurants, cafes, parks, factories, clubs, and recreation centers which are the main focus of this project. As a result, the city nowadays is much more crowded on a daily basis and buildings are going up quicker than anyone could imagine. Despite this, however, there is a lack in the recreational development movement, basically in the Eastern side of the city.   Recreation centers provide an opportunity for people, who have similar interests, to get together and enjoy leisurely time doing something they love. However, in Nablus, as an Arab-eastern society, women suffer from the fact that most of the recreational activities are tending to target male-audience. That is why there is a need for a specialized recreational centers concern with womens activities, which will be provided through this project. The main objective of the project is to design integrated recreational centers in all aspects starting with the analysis of the site and ending with Furniture arrangement. Also, to avoid operation and maintenance problems during the design development and review stages. Architectural design: The architectural design considers the shape of the building, personnel circulation and the appropriate functionality for each room. Structural design: in the structural design, the structure will be represented in a 3-D model which accounts for dynamic analysis and seismic design, the analysis and design of the structure will be carried out using computer software. Mechanical design: in the mechanical, the HVAC, water, and sanitary systems in the project will be analyzed and designed. Environmental design, the environmental design will include the orientation of the building, thermal masses and type of insulation used in the building. Electrical design: the electrical design of the structure will be performed to satisfy lighting and power system requirement. Public safety design: in public safety design, emergency exits and fire protection systems will be designed.
