Abstract
Our project is Computer Numerical Control Machine (CNC) which performs engraving on wood or plastic plate. The main goal is to engrave picture on wood. This type of engraving will provide a souvenir as a gift. The project consists of two main parts; first part will be both mechanical and electrical and second part will be software. The mechanical and electrical part include three stepper motors; two are needed to control the motion of wood or plastic plate in both X and Y directions, third motor is needed in the Z direction to left up or down spindle which holds engraving bits. Each stepper motor needs a power and logic driver to supply required voltage and current needed to control the rotation direction of stepper. The software side is responsible for generating G-code. G-code is the common name for the numerical control (NC) programming language. This code tells the computerized machine tools the instructions of where to move to, how fast to move, and through what path to move. The interfacing part consists of one microcontroller which is responsible for receiving G-code from PC and feeds the steppers with correct sequences to move. Due to high costs and difficulties in importing CNC machines in our country, we believe that this project can meet the needs of the local market by producing a high quality product with low cost and can be expanded to be commercial product.
