dc.description.abstract | Background: This study is based on the development of a cognitive behavioral group therapy (CBGT) program aimed at helping adolescents residing in institutional care facilities enhance their level of psycho-social adjustment. The study focused on designing the program using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques to address the psychological stress and challenges faced by these individuals, employing methods and strategies to train them to cope and adapt effectively. Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a cognitive behavioral group program in improving the level of psycho-social adjustment among adolescents residing in institutional care facilities in Jerusalem. Method: The study involved 20 male adolescents residing in care institutions in Jerusalem. Participants were carefully selected based on specific criteria, including age (15–21 years). A purposive sampling method was used, excluding adolescents who had not resided in institutional care for at least six months or had been transferred between institutions more than once during the past six months, in order to ensure environmental stability. Informed consent was obtained from all participants. Adolescents under 15, recent arrivals, those frequently moved between institutions, or those without consent were excluded. The sample was equally divided into two groups: an experimental group and a control group, with 10 participants in each. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data, using questions specifically designed to meet the objectives of the study. Results: The findings showed that adolescents in institutional care in Jerusalem experience a moderate level of psycho-social adjustment and a decline in psychological well-being, including high levels of depression, low self-esteem, and weak self-image development—highlighting a clear need for targeted support. Following the implementation of the cognitive behavioral group therapy program, significant improvements were observed across all areas of psycho-social adjustment, including psychological well-being and self-identity formation, with a noticeable decrease in depressive symptoms. The results indicated that the type of therapeutic group had a major impact on these positive outcomes, whereas age and length of institutional residency had little to no effect—underscoring the importance of the initial psychological and social conditions in shaping intervention effectiveness.
