Abstract
This research addresses the design of a modern cultural center in the city of Qalansuwa, titled “The Beating Heart of the Community Center”, which aims to provide an interactive space that brings together culture, art, education, and community identity. The idea emerged in response to the need within the Palestinian society inside the Green Line for a space that strengthens belonging and counters attempts to erase cultural identity, especially among youth.
The research begins with a comprehensive definition of culture, its characteristics, and its relation to civilization, along with a historical overview of the emergence of cultural centers and their evolving roles throughout history. The study also highlights the importance of these centers in promoting cultural awareness, supporting creativity, and offering opportunities for interaction among different segments of society.
The study includes a case analysis of the Plassen Cultural Center in Norway, as a distinguished example of multi-functional cultural design. The analysis covered the design concept, project components, materials used, construction systems, and the spatial relationship between interior and exterior.
The research also includes an in-depth site analysis for the proposed project in Qalansuwa, covering geographical, climatic, legal, and environmental aspects. Social and urban conditions surrounding the site were examined to ensure the project’s integration with its local context and community activities.
The study further addresses the adopted design standards and the required areas for each facility, focusing on key functions such as the theater, library, exhibition halls, workshop rooms, computer labs, public gardens, and cafeteria. Functional relationships between spaces and the circulation of movement within the center were also determined.
Finally, the project’s final vision was presented through architectural plans, elevations, sections, and visual renderings that reflect the practical translation of the core idea—creating a vibrant center filled with culture and belonging, serving as a sustainable development hub in the heart of the city.
