Abstract
This study aims at evaluating the “genetics and society” Open Online Course (MOOC) from the participant/designer perspective. To achieve this, the researcher used the descriptive methodology to address the study's questions and hypotheses. Three tools have been used throughout the study: a questionnaire, a semi-structured interview, a checklist for European quality standards according to the European Association of Distance Teaching Universities (EADTU). The questionnaire includes 36 paragraphs distributed into six main fields and the total reliability of the questionnaire is 0.96. The study population consists of all participants in the course. A convenience sample of 125 students has been taken from the participants. Ten students participating in the course, two instructors and two designers have been interviewed. The results indicate that the Genetics and Society course meets the European quality standards. From the participants perspective, the researcher has found that the average of the total score of the course evaluation is 4.30. Also, there are no statistically significant differences at the level of significance (α = 0.05) in the degree of evaluation of the course due to gender and college variables. As for the results of the interview with the instructors and designers, the two teams have indicated that they have designed the course according to the internationally adopted standards in designing open online courses. They have mentioned some of the obstacles, such as time adequacy for the meetings resulting from work conditions, and lack of funding for this project.
The study recommends expanding and focusing more on the topics presented in the course, encouraging performing research on the course in order to develop it, and raising funds to support the course.
