The graduation project "Edge of the Root" aims to redefine the relationship between the city and its coastline through the design of a vibrant waterfront that reflects the local identity and fosters community belonging. The concept stems from the symbolism of the “root” as a representation of cultural permanence and Palestinian identity, juxtaposed with the “edge” as a zone of openness, interaction, and transition — creating a unique spatial experience that bridges memory and future vision. Located in one of the most environmentally and socially fragile coastal areas, the project is designed to establish a balance between responding to the natural context and enhancing human activity. It consists of an integrated urban ensemble, including a pedestrian promenade, a small harbor, communal green spaces, a main building crowned with a spiraling architectural tower symbolizing dynamism and contemporary Palestinian identity, along with seaside hotel units inspired by the Maldivian style — combining privacy and luxury. The project adopts a sustainable architectural vision that addresses environmental and climatic challenges through the use of local materials, building orientation in response to sun and wind patterns, and flexible structural systems supporting the spiraling geometry of the tower. Social sustainability is also at the core of the design, offering open public spaces that encourage social interaction and contribute to economic development by promoting tourism and job creation. "Edge of the Root" is not merely a design proposal — it is a vision to redraw the boundaries between the city and the sea, heritage and modernity, people and place. It is a call to reclaim neglected coastal spaces and transform them into active, meaningful parts of the urban and social fabric.
