This project documents the selection, design and testing of the engine for Formula SAE car as a part of the powertrain system, taking in consideration all the factors affecting the completion of the project. As explained in the first report which represented the research for this project, these factors represented the study of material structure, aerodynamics, suspension dynamics, internal combustion engine, selection of materials, and the requirements for manufacturing. In this report, additional essential factors were explained including sponsorship, and project management which if handled correctly, could potentially be the pivotal factor of this project. Before selecting the engine, thorough research of engine choice is carried out. Once the type of engine that is suitable for the Formula SAE vehicle was determined, all of the parameters that impact on the selection of the engine are analysed. To accurately predict which engine is the ‘optimum engine’, a model of the Formula SAE car’s acceleration performance will be created and the calculations will be undertaken using a software tool. The engine that is purchased for the Formula SAE car is sourced from a 700cc water-cooled motorcycle. Once the engine is purchased it is possible to design the fuelling system for the Formula SAE car. However due to budgetary restraints, there’s a big number of design limitations. The challenge to teams is to build a vehicle that can successfully maintain the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers rules. This project is considered as an educational, practical, and training exercise on mechanical engineering principles for the undergraduate and graduate students. Also, it is a high performance engineering project for engineering students to acquire design concepts in automotive, engineering skills, and the freedom to express their creativity and imagination. Finally, this project will develop experience, skills, and professionalism as ‘hands on engineers’, and hopefully to enhance education in the automotive industry in Palestine by achieving the main goals of this project which include, building and testing the first high performance racing car at An-Najah National University in Palestine, and acquire high level of knowledge and experience in automotive engineering, in addition to enhancing experience in reverse and forward engineering to exploit and make use of the low potential resources to get the best possible results by gaining engineering skills in design, manufacturing, and the ability to solve problems.
