dc.description.abstract | Abstract Technology has many benefits in communication and education. However, its overuse may impact users' personal life and their mental health. Recent studies show that people are becoming attached to smartphones and use them extensively in daily activities. A relationship exists between smartphone use and online game playing with academic performance. This study assessed how smartphone use and online game playing relate to high school students' performance. The current study follows the quantitative approach, relying on data collection from the study sample. The research adopts a convenience sample of 260 students selected from the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades of the public schools in Arara-ara. The results show that the total degree for high school students who use smartphones was 3.56, which suggests a high level of estimation. The total degree of engagement in online gaming is 2.75, indicating a moderate level. There is a statistically significant negative relation between Smartphone addiction and high school students’ academic performance, with a Pearson Correlation of (- 0.549), and a negative statistically significant relation between online playing games and high school students’ academic performance, Pearson Correlation (-0.362). Using smartphones and playing online games can change students' performance in school. Also, smartphones help students find learning materials and interact with others. However, using them extensively can cause severe problems for students, impacting their sleeping patterns. Such behaviours can cause depression, stress, and difficulty focusing on their academic performance at school. Similarly, if used in moderation, online gaming may provide entertainment benefits for students. However, excessive play is associated with academic decline. These findings align with previous studies that indicate these technologies positively and negatively impact student performance. The study emphasizes the importance of balanced smartphone and gaming use, with appropriate supervision from parents and educators to mitigate negative effects and enhance students' academic experiences. | |
