The purpose of this study was to define the level of the fourth class students and their comprehension of the subjects which have been read in Arabic Language. So it tried to answer the following questions: 1-What is the level of the fourth grade pupils achievement in reading compression : (high, medium, or low) 2-Is there a statistical significant difference in the fourth grade pupils reading achievement, due to the supervising authority? 3-Is there a statistical significant difference in the fourth grade pupils reading achievement, due to the gender? 4-Is there a statistical significant difference in the fourth grade pupils reading achievement, due to the place of residence? To answer the above questions, the researcher designed a comprehension test to measure the fourth grade students’ achievement in reading comprehension. The test consisted of three passages. Then the researcher developed 33 items for each of these passages. The items were designed to measure four skills in each passage. The whole test was consisted of (99) items. Proper methods were used to ensure the test validity by a group of jury that consisted of experts in the curricula and Arabic Language teaching methods fields. The reliability of the test was calculated by using test and retest the exam and the result was (93.0). The population of the study consisted of fourth grade pupils in the public govermental and in the UNRWA schools in Nablus Educational District under the supervision of teachers who hold diplomas in Arabic language (Two years after the high school exam). Thus, the population consisted of (3526) pupils distributed to (90) class sections. The sample of the study consisted of (480) of the fourth grade pupils (236 males and 242 females) distributed to twelve class sections. The sample represented 13% of the whole population. The obtained data were analyzed using the following methods: 1-Percentages and means to measure the fourth grade pupils achievement in reading comprehension : (high, medium, or low). 2-Independent (t—test) in order to_test the two hypotheses that are related to gender and to the supervising authority. 3-One way ANOVA in order to examine the hypothesis related to the place of residence. 4-Scheffe test in order to identify with whom there were differences in the testing skills and the total score. This testing skills showed the following results: 1-The fourth grade students reading achievement in reading comprehension was medium. 2-There were statistical significant differences in the fourth pupils’ achievement in the reading comprehension, due to the supervising authority, in favour of the public govermental schools pupils. 3-There were statistical significant differences in the fourth grade pupils’ achievement in reading comprehension, due to the gender, in favour of male pupils. 4-There were statistical significant differences in the fourth grade pupils achievement in the reading comprehension, due to the place of residence: between pupil’s who live in the city and those who live in the refugee camps, in favour of those who live in the city, and between pupils who live in villages and students who live in refugee camps, in favour of those who live in villages. But there were no statistical significant differences between pupils who live in the city and those who live in villages. 5-There were statistical significant differences in the fourth grade pupils’ achievement in the reading comprehension in the four skills and the total score between the pupils at the public schools and the pupils at the UNRWA schools, in favour of those at the public governmental schools. 6-Results_also showed that there was an obvious decline in the fourth grade pupils’ achievement especially in the skill of repeating thesequence of events. In the light of these results, the researcher recommended the followings: 1-Conducting further studies to identify the level of reading comprehension among the basic stage students. 2-The center of developing new curricula should give attention to the different skills of teaching Arab language especially the skill of repeating the sequence of events. 3-Increasing the training workshops for the Arabic language teachers of the basic stage, especially the first grade, teachers. 4-Decreasing the number of pupils in the classes, so that the number of pupils should reach the optimal size.en
