Abstract
I his study aimed at determining the textbook readability level for sixth grade pupils in the Nablus District. To achieve this, the study sample (n. 608 ) was selected randomly from sixth grade pupils studying at the schools of the Nablus District distributed at the city and some of its Villages in accordance with their percentage of their representation in the study population. The number of schools where the test was administered was 14 schools distributed as follows: 1 basic schools for boys in the city, 4 schools for boys in the village, 3 schools for girls in the city, four basic schools for girls in the village. And one mixed school. Six excerpts were selected randomly from the subjects of the text book. To achieve the aim of the study, the cloze procedure was used to determine the readability level of the selected excerpts. Means and percentages were used for each excerpt and the total degree. The results were good for the religious and fiction excerpts, medium for educational social excerpts, and satisfactory for scientific, culture, and political excerpts. The repeated ,Multiple Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) of the statician Wilk's, Lambda was used to measure if there were differences among the excerpts. The result showed significant differences at (α= 0.05 ) in readability among the studied excerpts. To determine what excerpts had differences, the Sidac test for binary comparison was used to compare between the means. The results showed significant differences at (α= 0.05) in excerpt readability. The excerpts that had the highest scores were , fiction, religious and social excerpts respectively. The results of the scientific, political, and cultural excerpts were almost equal in readability level.
