Abstract
A major problem faces underground electrical power distribution networks is the presence of fault prior to the energizing phase of any project. The fault could be either an open circuit, or short circuit caused by accidental damage during the construction phase. Fault detection can be determined by the time domain reflectometer (TDR), which is a device that transmit a narrow pulse and observes the shape of the reflected pulse. In this project we designed a simple TDR system that is able to detect fault, fault type, and the exact location of the fault. The TDR device we made is composed from a narrow pulse generator, faulty cable and a fast sampling oscilloscope. The TDR system was able to detect open and short circuit faults. It was possible also to determine the distance to fault point precisely
