While in the second stage, the product is analyzed as powders for particle size and particle size distribution using the following technique: X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). Introduction The project focus on synthesis and characterization of MgO and FeO Where the Characterization part include checking and testing the samples available by different devices like XRD , SEM , TEM , UV and etc . But the device that was chosen to check the size of the samples is XRD , as it’s the only device available in our country specifically in Arab American University – Jenin . What is X-Ray Diffraction? X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) is a rapid analytical technique used for phase identification of a crystalline material ,provide information on unit cell dimensions, and for determining the mean size of Nano crystallites. Both phases of MgO & Feo demonstrates very sharp peak . As shown later in results Synthesis OF MgO and FeO Preparation of MgO Dry Magnesium carbonate in oven at 90C ⸰ MgCO3∆→MgO+CO2 Weigh a sample of 1g MgO Heat it at different temperature using electric furnace Preparation of FeO Dry iron oxide in oven at 90C ⸰ 2FeO.OH∆→Fe2O3 + H2O Weigh a sample of 0.5g Fe₂O ₃ Heat it at different temperature using electric furnace Characterization XRD TEST: Different samples were chosen to apply them for the test, the steps were: Preparation of powder samples Put the sample on the specified glass for the device. Insert the sample inside the device for the test by closing on it. Insert the wanted data like speed, range of angle and etc on the software. The Miniflex program starts drawing the graph of 2θ versus intensity. Results and Discussion The best samples were taken to test them in the XRD. As mentioned earlier that the range of diameter of a Nano particle is from (0-100) nm, and the diameter of the samples didn’t exceed 50nm .When the temperature increase the size of the diameter increase, it was noticed also that as the temperature rise the width of the peak get narrower. It have been discovered the all ceramic crucible’s were used shows high percentage of error. There was some human error, which make us do more trials for each sample. Long time to do XRD test for each sample Conclusion The preparation of metal oxide in this project was synthesized by hydrothermal method. There was a theoretical loss that was calculated. Samples were tested in XRD, then Miniflex draw the result to find later its diameter. The results of our samples in general for MgO were from (1.2 – 3.7) nm , As for the FeO the results were (8.1-11.4)nm . Finally our goal have been achieved, as the assumption that was made become real , Nano size exist in the samples . Recommendation 1- There should be X-Ray Diffraction device in An-Najah University 2- Safety tools should be available , with better quality due to dealing with high temperature . 3- special crucible material should available , it result in the product quality .
