Abstract
In recent years, manufacturing firms started facing growing awareness about sustainability development from different stakeholders. The current study aims to investigate the impact of total quality management (TQM) on corporate sustainability (CS) through mediating role of corporate social responsibility (CSR). Six TQM practices were adopted from the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) model, CS was composed of environmental, social and economic aspects, and CSR was measured through community, customers and employees' dimensions. A mixed research approach was adopted by conducting 12 semi-structured interviews with quality managers, production managers, and chief executive officers in the manufacturing sector in the West Bank-Palestine. A survey was used as a quantitative tool for data collection from 67 respondents at different managerial levels. Partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was used for analysis. The findings indicated high levels of implementation of TQM practices and CSR activities. Moreover, CS was implemented at high level. Prioritization of TQM practices was established, where the most influential practices were ‘customer focus’ and ‘human resource management’, followed by ‘strategic planning’, ‘process management’; the least influential practices were ‘leadership’ and ‘information analysis’. structural analysis revealed that TQM had a significant and positive impact on CS. The results also indicated a significant and positive influence of TQM on CSR. Furthermore, a similar impact of CSR is found on CS. Finally, CSR partially mediates the relationship between TQM and CS. A framework was developed to provide policy makers with a set of guidelines on how to integrate TQM practices and CSR activities in their strategy and operational process to achieve sustainable development objectives.
