Abstract
Palestine sets under special circumstances that limits it’s opportunities of getting power, particularly, clean power, due to occupation, the high prices of electricity and the fact the Natural energy sources are scarce (wind and hydro). The hydro power plant is a type of renewable power plant and it is environment friendly. It depends on converting water flow energy into electrical energy. This type of small turbine is designed to be installed in rivers or cannels that have small head and small flow rate, and it is easy to be operated with minimum operation costs. This project aims to design a hydro power plant and calculating the power that can be produced by the Farrah cannel, Nablus city, Palestine. The feasibility of the project and the capital back period have been also calculated. This project will be a great method of harnessing wasted water with preventing it from flooding and produce electricity, particularly, under the special circumstances Farrah Cannel has (4–6) meter width and 750-1750 (m^3/hour) flow rate, at this level of the project 0.60-meter blades width was used in 25 cm water level in the canal to produce 0.42 A and 9.70 V (244.44) Watt-Hour (Wh). The design producers of turbine have implemented by using SolidWorks and MATLAB Simulink software to design system and estimate the produced power of the system, the turbine output power is promising and it could be improved by reducing the mechanical losses, the turbine efficiency is 0.75 and the produced power used to feed some of the next street lightning and to power water pumps used in agriculture.
