Abstract
Soil mechanics is the branch of science that deals with the study of physical properties of soil and the behavior of soil masses subjected to various types of forces. Soil engineering is the application of principles of the soil mechanics to practical problems. Foundation engineering is a clever combination of soil mechanics, engineering geology and proper judgment derived from past experience. To a certain extent, it may be called an art (Das, 2011). Soil mechanics and foundation engineering have been developed rapidly during the last fifty plus year. The design of foundation of a structure is the most important part of any structure and usually requires knowledge of the load of the building, local codes, shear strength of the soil and geological conditions of the site. The foundation is used extensively in construction, being built upon and used as construction materials. While Soils are formed when the processes of rock weathering proceed at a faster rate than the transport processes by water, gravity and wind, whereby much of the resulting soils will remain in place. The soil typically retains many of the characteristics of the parent rock. The foundations are divided into two main types, namely, shallow foundation and deep foundation. The aim of this project is figure out the most appropriate foundation type for Residential Multistory Building suggested to be designed in this project. Review of different types of foundation systems including shallow and deep foundation and presenting all aspects of foundation engineering is presented in Chapter Two. Chapter Three summarizes the main point of site investigation report, it includes suggested types of foundation, depth of foundation, bearing capacity, and other suggestions regarding foundation of the building. Structural analysis including SAP analysis for static and earthquake loads is presented in Chapter Four. Plan of the building including columns ' centers and tables presented the loads can be found also in this chapter. Chapter Five presents the structural design of the proposed building for both types of foundation systems suggested, which are isolated footings and mat foundation. It shows detailed sections including dimensions and reinforcement for both types of foundation systems and for both cases of loadings which are gravity loads and seismic and gravity loads. Chapter Six presents the cost comparisons between the suggested two types of foundation systems. The comparisons made according to concrete sections and reinforcement.
