Abstract
Asphalt pavements are made up of several layers and different types of materials are being used as base courses in these pavements, the properties of these pavement layers are affected significantly by temperature, the concept of extracting heat energy from asphalt pavements will be studied. As we known that the source of energy in Palestine is limited, so in our project we aim to use the temperature of asphalt as a new source of energy to heat the water, then we can use it in many applications. The solar energy gives the same result, but we go to capturing energy from pavement to save areas and it is lower cost compared to traditional solar cells, in addition cool the asphalt pavements, thus reducing the urban heat island effect. The scope of work consisted of finite element modeling and testing with small asphalt pavement samples. Water flowing through copper tubes inserted within asphalt pavements samples will be used as heat exchangers in the experiments. We will use the rise in temperature of water as a result of flow through the asphalt pavement as the indicator of efficiency of heat capture.
