Abstract
Relevance of the Project There are several problems in the study area need to solve, for example, congestion and parking problems in Sufian Street, also congestion and safety problems in Haifa Street So this project is necessary to facilitate the movement of vehicles of the western entrance of Nablus city center and reduce the congestion on it. Also, to regulate enter and exit of shared taxi to/from the Nablus Municipal complex. Finally, to organize the parking and pedestrian movement on it. Area under study  In this project, the study will cover the western entrance of Nablus city from As-Salam Mosque intersection to the western entrance of Nablus Municipal Complex. This area includes Hamdi Kanaan Street, Haifa Street, Prince Mohammad Street, and Sufian Street with their all intersection between them, in addition to all entrances of Nablus Municipal Complex, West Nablus Complex for cities and West Nablus Complex for villages. Existing problems  As mentioned previously, there are major observed problems in this area includes:     Congestion problem This is the most critical problem which can be noticed obviously. It is caused mainly by the increase in travel due to economic and commercial development resulted from population increase in Nablus city, compared with limited streets capacity. Moreover, this will also cause delays at signalized and un-signalized intersections. Safety problem  As the number of vehicle and vehicle-miles of travel increase throughout the area, this area is exposed to high rate of crashes which are observed clearly at intersections, therefore in this project there will be an attempt to reduce crash rates. Parking problem It's noticeable and obvious that there is a huge number of visitors come to Nablus daily; this caused a huge number of different vehicles which reach the study area. As there are not enough parking spaces drivers are forced to park illegally. This contributes to congestion in this area. Objectives The main objective of this project is to analyze and develop the western entrance of Nablus city center, moreover, to solve problems that were mentioned earlier. This project will offer and examine possible solutions in order to reduce the congestion in the study area. First, there will a suggestion to build a tunnel which connects Haifa Street with Hamdi Kanaan Street. Second, there will be a proposal for proper separation of shared taxis that enter and exit Nablus Municipal Complex. Ultimately, the study will propose solution for parking and pedestrian flow. Therefore this project is necessary to try to facilitate the movement of vehicles at study area. Recommendations  After studying the problems that face the study area and analyzing the data collected, and proposing conceptual designs for the solutions, intensive studies should be done to the solutions including detailed feasibility studies, cost benefits and social acceptance.  For a radical solution, applying the construction of a tunnel (underpass) which starts from Haifa Street to Hamdi Kanaan Street, it is apparent that would solve most of the problems that face the study area for the next period, with an appropriate costs and acceptable results.
