Abstract
Soil reinforcement is one of the new technologies in constructing retaining wall. It considers the most common method in constructing retaining walls in developed countries. The modern concept of soil reinforcement was pioneered at a wide scale by Casagrande and the French engineer Vidal in the 1960s. Present engineers use Vidals concepts in soil reinforcement till today in constructing retaining structures. These concepts introduced many ways of reinforcing soil that led later on to the development of Mechanically Stabilized Retaining Walls. Dams, bridge abutments, embankments and retaining walls are all examples of structures that use reinforced earth concept in construction. The main task of this project is to design a selected retaining wall using soil reinforcement and to compare between the traditional construction method and this modern technology in designing of retaining walls. Chapter Two which is the first part of our project will deal with the revision of reinforced earth and traditional retaining wall in terms of historical development, applications and the advantages and disadvantages of soil reinforcement in general. The historical development presents the contributions made by early pioneers in soil reinforcement and the modern uses of these concepts in todays retaining structures. Moreover, the applications part illustrates the main roles played by each application in serving a certain purpose related to it.Chapter Three expresses various topics related to Mechanically Stabilized Retaining Walls (MSRW) in terms of lateral earth pressure, conventional retaining walls and mechanically stabilized retaining walls. The lateral earth pressure part discusses the types of earth pressure and evaluation of the theory of earth pressure. Other than that, various applications concerning lateral earth pressure are also illustrated taking into account the types of conventional retaining walls, method of design and construction. Lastly, this chapter presents a detailed illustration of Mechanically Stabilized Retaining Walls taking into notice the types of mechanically stabilized systems, reinforcing materials, facing systems, types of reinforcement, backfill materials, and construction method. Chapter Four is considered to be the launching point for the design of real life retaining walls. This chapter will present the method of design for conventional retaining walls. It will mainly discuss two divisions related to the design which are the geotechnical and structural designs. The geotechnical design part will thoroughly explain checks made by todays engineers for various issues such as bearing capacity, overturning and sliding. As for the structural design part, it will explore the need for performing calculations for strength and thicknesses of each component of a retaining wall. Moreover, the steel reinforcement will be detailed throughout a solved example using state of the art concepts and theories taken from the ACI code. Chapter Five will consider the second part of design which will be related to mechanically stabilized retaining walls with metallic strips only.  This design will be based on the same data used in Chapter Four for the design of conventional retaining walls. At first, general design considerations will be given as a starting point for the design and then followed by an extensive design procedure for MSRW with metallic strips. The procedure will consist of checks for internal and external stability and finally supported with an example to clarify this procedure.  Chapter Six represents a comparison between both MSRW and Conventional RW technologies in terms of quantities and costs.
