Abstract
Amman Street is one of the important streets in the City of Nablus. It has heavy traffic volume almost all day long. The street experiences constant traffic jams and its asphalt surface is defected. It also has active commercial, light industrial and educational activities. Therefore, it is important to shed a light on the problems, find the causes, and find some viable solutions so that Nablus Municipality may apply these solutions as much as possible.The objectives of this study are evaluating the traffic, geometric, and pavement conditions of the street, solving the traffic jam problems and reducing delay, redesigning of the streets and intersections  (geometric design), and redesigning of asphalt and conducting the necessary field tests.The methodology that was conducted in this study was based on previous studies in this area, as well as using techniques, methods, and references adopted globally. The team made field visits to Amman Street to determine the boundaries of the study area, prepared a report on the state of the street, and collected field data on the flow of traffic on this street. Geometric, pavement, and traffic data were analyzed, and the design was on the basis of the results obtained from the analysis phase. The analysis and designs were based on AASHTO, MUTCD, and local specifications and standards. Finally, the work done is presented in a report with the necessary design plans, tables, and figures. The result from this project: traffic improvements, geometric designs, and pavement designs are provided. This improves traffic conditions and reduces congestion level. It also improves traffic safety conditions for the study area. Furthermore, the improvements are expected to improve pavement conditions and riding comfort. The results of this study will also be useful for future studies as well.Conclusions:The required thickness of pavement layers is:         Asphalt layer = 7 cm         Base course layer  = 20 cm         Subbase layer = 20 cmThe design speed for the study areas is 50 km/h.The elements of the cross section are as following:         The number of lanes for the road will require 2 lanes.         Lane width is taken to be 3.6m for this project.         Usable shoulder width of 2.4 m is preferred in this project.         A median of 1.2 m wide is used for the future cross section.         Sidewalks in the residential area are varying from 1.8 m to 4m.         Parking lane with 2.5 wide is used in the residential area. Required geometric improvements, traffic control devices, and pavement mark in were also presented.
