Abstract
In the last period, a proposal for moving the eastern and western terminals from their original locations to new locations away from the city centre and city congestion was postponed by the Municipality of Nablus due to the lack of preparedness with proper connections from these to the city centre. After reviewing the proposed locations of the new terminals, it was necessary to plan a new system of public transportations to facilitate the rapid transport of the people between the new terminals and Central Business District (CBD) area. After the collected data in the study area were analysed, it was found that most of the intersections and links suffer from traffic congestion, due to increase the traffic volumes with respect to the capacities. Also the large numbers of passengers heading to the terminals during the morning and afternoon periods had been noticed. This emphasized the need for effective public transportation system to meet the demand of passengers to their destinations. To find the proper way of transporting, mass public transportation systems worldwide were scouted to be the most appropriate system that could be applicable to connect between the two new proposed terminals. In this project, the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is proposed, which is one of the systems that had proved its effectiveness worldwide and its ability to transport passengers efficiently. After that, the methodology of designing an efficient public transportation was defined, and the needed information were collected and analysed. Next, alternatives of connecting between the terminals and the city centre in addition to the new campus of An-Najah National University were proposed and evaluated. The choice between the proposed alternatives was conducted to reach the recommended solution that is most proper for the public transportation system. In the design phase, the criteria of the BRT system were considered to choose the suggested dimensions, especially the widths.  The alternatives that could be applicable were identified, so do the bus stops and terminals. Design takes into consideration the current streets Right of Way (ROW), and the number of passengers and their destinations. About 2000 passengers are estimated to use the system during the peak hour. About 3.4 m were designed of BRT lanes, % of these were designed as dedicated lanes, while the rest were shared. For the predicted future traffic volumes, the proposed design for the system for the future is conducted as well. All relevant road rehabilitation and traffic control devices were designed. At the end of the project, there was estimation for the cost of the project according to the elements that is needed to implement this project, which reached about $15,000,000.
