- ItemTranslating Keats's "Ode to Autumn" into Arabic Poetry: A Practical Approach(2007-10-21) Dr. Mu'tasem Tawfiq Khader
This study is a demonstration of my understanding of poetry translation from a personal, practical perspective and presents an insight into the nature of this type of translation, which is subjective because the translator cannot be neutral. In this paper, I record my experience in translating Keats' "Ode to Autumn," presenting my ideas, feelings, impressions, and the steps I followed while translating this ode. I also present scholars' and translators' ideas349and opinions that supported mine. By using this practical approach, I tackled a number of issues related to translating poetry and the reader’s appreciation of and pleasure from the product of the translation, which I consider the criterion for success. Thus, I emphasize the reader's importance in this approach and present to him, as an example to judge, my translation into Arabic of Keats’ “Ode to Autumn". However, this approach does not underestimate translation theories. At the end of this paper, there is an appendix that includes “Ode to Autumn,” followed by two literary translations of this poem, in which I use the traditional form and the free verse form, respectively.

5. المراجع:

- ItemVariation of Understanding the Crusade Wars between Western and Islamic Civilization(2007-10-21) Dr. Bilal Shafei

This research deals with an important field which is neglected by certain researchers or they don’t pay much attention to it when taking about culture exchange and civilization talk and their chief means which is the language. The research focuses on the presence of certain language mistakes which affect the language value and significance under the influence of the improper translation which the researcher insist to call it very bad translation because it might go beyond mistreating the language itself as it can shed the light on different important aspects of certain nation without affecting it’s language negatively. It is worth to be mentioned that the mechanic translation is the major cause of the presence of such mistakes, as c consequence, the researchers focus on the importance of the translation for a nation in the condition that it will not mistreat the language. The research concentrate on certain limited language mistakes in Arabic language as a result of translation and it explains briefly the way the mistake occurs providing the necessary references when required either in English or Arabic. The research deals with the importance of translation in which the researchers concentrate on a particular historical period when the proper translation into Arabic flourished without affecting its rules. That has been achieved through the reading between the lines at the same time not neglecting the descriptive analytic method. The research insists upon all writers and those who are specialized in the translation field to be careful and avoid mistakes in general and particularly those common ones. The researcher collected the following mistakes in order to be viewed by those who are interested in this field bearing in mind that those common mistakes have been handled properly according to the researchers’expectations.a

- ItemThe difficulties which undergraduate English Language students encounter in their interpretation of English formulaic expression to Arabic(2007-10-21) Dr. Ayman Nazal
This paper investigates the difficulties that undergraduate and graduate students of English Language encounter in their understanding and interpretation of English formulaic expressions to Arabic. Since the majority of formulaic expressions in English or any language potentially contain more than one interpretation, it has been assumed that these expressions constitute a major problem for non-native speakers of English Language particularly for those who do not have adequate pragmatic competence in the target culture. The difficulties that nonnative speakers experience in their interpretation of formulaic expression seems to confirm Dell Hyme’s (1971, 1974) notion of the importance of acquiring ‘communicative competence’, in the target culture. Such competence enables the non-native speakers to learn the rules of language use in a variety of social contexts. The interpretation task which is being used in this study consists of three English formulaic expressions randomly selected to measure both underand graduate students’ pragmatic competence in interpreting these formulaic expressions. The results of this study are based on the written interpretation and solicitation of responses from 83 undergraduates of English Language and 13 graduate students of Applied Linguistics and Translation. The disparity in their performance on the interpretation task which was administered to both groups unequivocally ascertain the belief that adequate and continued exposure to the target culture is highly essential for the acquisition of literacy and the avoidance of misinterpretation of these expressions. Graduate students have done overwhelming well in comparison with undergraduate whose performance on the same task was mediocre. The performance of graduate students is obviously due to their continued training in translating materials from and into the target culture. This study emphasizes the importance of providing students of English Language adequate training and courses in pragmatics and translation so that they could acquire some adequate pragmatic competence in the target language. And based on the nature and type of their written responses it is self-evident that inadequate exposure to the target culture5is the main cause for undergraduate’s mediocre performance on the interpretation task.
